The Member of Parliament for the Bantama constituency in the Ashanti Region, Daniel Okyem Aboagye has publicly knelt down to plead with the NPP’s chairman in the region to also declare his constituency as one of those that parliamentary primaries should not be held.
According to a report by Peacefmonline.com, the incident happened at the meeting with constituency and polling station executives of the party, as well as electoral area coordinators. The meeting was chaired by the NPP’s national second vice chairman, Mr. F.F Antoh.
‘’I beg you, Chairman [Wontumi], in the name of God, let me go unopposed like the others. Add me to the MPs who are not being contested in the upcoming primaries,’’ Okyem begged, almost in tears. The Bantama MP’s action comes on the back of rumor that he may loose his seat in the parliamentary primaries to Francis Asenso Boakye, the deputy Chief of Staff if nominations are opened. It is believed that Mr. Okyem Aboagye’s plea is to prevent the deputy Chief of Staff from contesting him in the primaries slated for the end of April, 2020.
This week, it has been reported in the media that the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Wontumi has named some constituencies in the region where there would be no parliamentary primaries held
But the NPP’s Ashanti Regional secretary, Sam Payne denied the party had taken any such decision in a radio interview.
The former president in his New Year message also urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure peace and violence-free elections 2020.
